William Powell, 89, in East Canton, Ohio is celebrating his Clearview Golf Club's 60th anniversary this year.

On July 7th, 2006, the Wadsworth Golf Charities Foundation made a special presentation to Bill Powell for not only fulfilling his dream but reaching a milestone of 60 years of ownership in Clearview Golf Club. William Powell is the only African-American in the country to design, build and run his own golf course which was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2001.

Mr. Powell's accomplishment is a testimony not only to his perseverance and tenacity, but to his sincere personality, integrity and strong faith that somehow, regardless of the obstacles - - - he and his wife, Marcella, would succeed and live their dream. By providing a golf course facility where everyone would be welcome to play and especially children - - - imagine the number of lives he has enriched from the opportunity to play this great game at Clearview.

Wadsworth Golf Charities Foundation salutes Bill Powell for achieving his dream at Clearview, which parallels the mission of the Foundation of making golf and the character-building attributes of the game more accessible to more people. He is truly "a Hero of Golf in America" for dedicating his life to helping people of all ages benefit more fully from a way of life that is golf.
